Tips: Succeeding in your Internship

So you got your internship, great! But it’s not over yet. Companies hire interns so they can evaluate them before providing them a full time offer. This is also an opportunity for the intern to evaluate the company and evaluate whether they want to work there full time. Below are some tips on how to succeed in your internship:

• Set expectations: Most internships involve a major project or a series of small projects. When given your project, make sure you are clear about your manager’s expectations and get clarity on what success looks like.
• Communicate: In working on your project, make sure you take your manager on the journey. Communicate to them on what you are doing, ask for their feedback and incorporate their feedback so that you are setting yourself up for success for the end of the summer.
• ALWAYS Remain Positive: Never bad mouth anyone at work…no matter how bad the circumstance. Your manager will often ask for feedback from your peers, and you don’t want any negative rumors be attributed back to you.
• Work Hard (and smart): Getting an internship is not a guarantee for a full time job. You have got to work extra hard in a short period of time and demonstrate that you are the right person qualified for the full time opportunity.
• Attend Office Activities: If you are invited to happy hour, go. If you are invited to a baby shower or birthday event, go. This shows that not only do you work hard, but you fit well with the company culture. People like working with people they get along with.
• Have fun! Use your internship as an opportunity to learn something new, gain exposure in an area of interest, and make new friends.

Tips: Succeeding in the GRE/GMAT

• Commit! Signing up for an exam date well in advance will reduce procrastination and force you to prepare early. Working toward a specific exam date will enable you to stagger your studying appropriately and tackle different areas of the exam. Give yourself at least 1.5 months in advance to study for the GRE.
• Practice. Practice. Practice. And then practice some more. You can’t wing these exams. Don’t just do a bunch of problem. Also take as many full practice exams as you can. This will help build your stamina during test day. The GRE test is also given online. Try to take full exams online to help simulate the actual test environment. Doing problems on paper is very different from solving them on the computer. Not practicing on the computer may slow you down on test day.
• Thinking about retaking the exam? Depending on your field of study and university, some students are able to take the GRE multiple times and the school will take the highest score. Other programs may require students to take the average of their graduate school exams. Researching ahead of time will allow you prepare appropriately.
• Exams are stressful. Be sure to take care of yourself (health and nutrition). A healthy body and mind will help you be at your cognitive best. The night before the exam, be sure to get plenty of rest and relaxation.
• Celebrate. After taking your exam, relax. It’s over! You’ve worked hard and you deserve a break. Happy studying!
